Earthquakes and Journalism: The New Yorker

With all of the coverage on the Haiti earthquakes, here is something just to think about.

"Journalism is not a particularly esteemed profession, but its capacity to bear witness remains one of its more redeeming attributes. At moments like this in Haiti, a journalist’s function as a witness can be relatively uncomplicated, in comparison to, say, the processes of political or investigative reporting. In the field during a natural disaster of this scale, you do feel at times ghoulish and intrusive upon both the grief of survivors and in relation to the more directly useful efforts of rescuers and humanitarian relief workers. And yet all of those classes of participants in the crisis will recognize, most of the time, that journalism helpfully amplifies their own condition or potential."

Amazing Lucie Foundation Grant! Deadline Jan. 25th

The Lucie Foundation is proud to support professionals and emerging talent who progress the art form of still photography through original subject matter, content, or processes. The Lucie Scholarship provides grants for projects and photographers with an ambitious scope for their work. One grant of $5,000 will be awarded to a professional photographer beginning a new project idea, or for a work in progress of a specific series. Also, one $2,500 grant will go to an emerging professional (student, graduate, or beginning professional) working on a portfolio or specific body of work. Our support of photography is broad, from photojournalism to fashion photography, digital to medium format, including every other category and subcategory. Our concern isn't with genre, but rather to support innovative work and to aid in artist visibility through exhibition of new work in a metropolitan gallery setting, as well as publication of the work in book format for increased exposure.

Two individual photographers total will be selected to receive a grant ($5,000 for a professional; $2,500 for an emerging professional). Recipients will also receive complimentary enrollment to a program at the Maine Media Workshop. Possible prizes also include photo-related supplies, involvement for emerging photographers in the Lucie Mentors E-pprentice program, a photographer's page on luciefoundation.org, a group exhibition in New York City (2010), and book publication of work.

The DEADLINE is January 25, 2010. Submissions will be accepted from no earlier than September 15, 2009 till no later than January 25, 2010. Winning notifications will be made at the end of February 2010.
